"Throughout the project year, participants experienced professional development on topics such as increasing the level of guided inquiry in the classroom, effective questioning, reading and writing to make meaning of science, and cutting edge scientific work. Beginning in January, the cohort became science graduate students at Florida State University as they began a two-semester sequence of courses, CHM 5830 and CHM 5832. The first course was designed to prepare teachers for a summer experience in the field, working alongside a scientist, and the second required each team of teachers to complete 90 hours of field work. Three major goals of the field experience were: foster collaboration among vertical teams of teachers from the same district, experience scientific inquiry in an authentic scientific setting, and gain awareness of valuable resources that may be tapped to make students' experiences in science more relevant."
